The Poisoning of Liberty

Angela Lin, 15

USA

August 2020 Edition

This piece is a painting of Lady Liberty. Lady Liberty has always been a symbol that represents America. It’s meant to show how injustice has poisoned her. In another interpretation, it could also be depicting her being influenced by Liberty in the form of wine.

Shining on Black Lives Matter

Fiorella Wells, 15

USA

August 2020 Edition

This was made to support the Black Lives Matter Movement. With the recent death of George Floyd and many other African Americans who were unjustly treated/killed by the police, the media began to shed light on the BLM Movement. The movement has been rightfully gaining momentum since then. In this piece, light shines on an African American woman who stands amongst a plane of vibrant colors. The colorful plane was intentionally made to stand out from the background, illustrating that the movement is now catching the eyes of numerous people on the internet.

Lively

Lin Jing Feucht, 16

USA

August 2020 Edition

"Shortly after midnight on March 13, Mr. Hankinson, along with officers Jon Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove, entered Ms. Taylor's apartment by executing a no-knock search warrant - a court document that authorizes police to enter a home without permission. Ms. Taylor and her partner, Kenneth Walker, were reportedly asleep when the commotion began. police said they knocked before using a battering ram to enter the home, though this fact has been disputed by Ms. Taylor's family and neighbor. The officers exchanged fire with Mr. Walker, a licensed gun owner who called 911 with the belief that the drug raid was a burglary. The officers - who fired over 25 bullets - said they returned fire after one officer was shot and wounded. During the exchange, Ms. Taylor, an emergency medical technician, was shot eight times. She died on her hallway floor. Mr. Walker surrendered and was arrested on charges of attempted murder of a police officer. A lawsuit filed by Ms. Taylor's family accuses the officers of battery, wrongful death, excessive force, and gross negligence." -BBC
